Kingwood police to patrol alley after complaint

KINGWOOD – Members of Kingwood City Council heard a complaint from Rachel LeVan, owner of the old Schwab building in Kingwood. She said three or four individuals were trying to get into her building.
"There are homeless folks staying in the alleyway behind the building," LeVan said. "There was an old ladder behind the building that had been moved, so we broke it up. We are hoping to put up cameras. We’ve already put out no trespassing signs."
She said after purchasing the building the alleyway was cleaned up, but someone recently dumped grass cuttings in it.
Mayor Karen Kurilko asked Chief Jason Stewart to have officers check the alleyway when doing their rounds.
The City will address the drainage issue on Miller Road after finding it has a 50 foot, not 30 foot of right of way. At a previous meeting, council voted to talk with the water and sewer department and the homeowner before taking action. Work is scheduled to begin Oct. 1.
In other business, City Supervisor Craig Watkins said the council should consider advertising for a mechanic to inspect city vehicles and work in the shop. No action was taken.
The City of Kingwood will be closing Price Street to hold Trunk or Treat from 4:30 to 7 p.m. Oct. 30. Traditional Trick or Treat will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Oct. 31.
Kingwood City Clerk Rhonda Ridenour said the city has everything in place to begin working on their Buckwheat Festival float this weekend. She said the material came to $1,741, below the amount that was budgeted for the project.
Court and High streets will be closed from 4:45 to 7:30 p.m. Dec. 4 for the annual Christmas Tree Lighting.
Businesses on Price Street can begin decorating the parking meters in front of their businesses for Christmas Nov. 23.
As an incentive to "shop local" meter fees are "no-pay" for the month of December.
Council voted to make up an audit committee consisting of Kurilko, recorder Kathy Mace and councilwoman Paula Janis to do a checklist.
The next meeting of Kingwood City Council will be at 6:30 p.m. Sept. 22.
