September makes us want to start fresh. The air begins to cool, and students return to campus as fall settles over Morgantown. For the arts community, it also marks the beginning of a new season filled with exhibitions, performances, workshops and opportunities to connect with local creativity.
Today, West Virginia University’s Canady Creative Arts Center will host the opening reception for Earth is a Snowball: Recent Work by School of Art & Design Faculty. The reception begins at 5 p.m. in the Douglas O. Blaney Lobby, allowing the community to meet the artists and experience the newest exhibition from WVU’s School of Art & Design faculty.
The exhibition takes its name from the “Snowball Earth” hypothesis, which proposes that Earth was once completely frozen, or nearly so, for a period hundreds of millions of years ago. The faculty artists use that fascinating idea as a jumping-off point for new creative work. The exhibition will remain on display in the Laura and Paul Mesaros Galleries through Nov. 4.
And Earth is a Snowball is just one of the ways to get out and experience the arts this month.
The Morgantown Art Association has several opportunities coming up for those who would rather make art than simply admire it. On Sept. 12, the association will host Pastel Possibilities with Diane Parker, followed by a Beginning Gelli Printing workshop on Sept. 19. These kinds of hands-on opportunities are a wonderful reminder that you don’t have to consider yourself an artist to make something. Sometimes all it takes is a willingness to try something new.
For families, the WVU Art Museum will host a Family Tailgate at the Art Museum on Sept. 12. The free, family-friendly event will feature outdoor games, crafts and an opportunity to explore the museum’s galleries.
And later this month, downtown will once again become a gathering place for artists, makers, musicians and art lovers during Moonlight Market on Sept. 19. The monthly market will take place from 4 to 9 p.m. at Morgantown Market Plaza and celebrate local art, community and creativity.
These events represent just a small portion of what is happening throughout Greater Morgantown. From galleries and museums to workshops, markets and performances, there are countless ways to make the arts part of your fall routine.
So as September gets underway, consider this your invitation to step outside your usual routine. Visit an exhibition. Pick up a paintbrush. Listen to a local musician. Bring the kids to a museum. Talk with an artist about their work.
You might discover that the best thing about a new season isn’t simply the change in weather -- it’s all the new ways there are to experience the creative community around us.
