MORGANTOWN — West Virginia scored two late goals Monday night to rally past George Mason, 2-1, inside Dick Dlesk Stadium.
Senior Pablo Pozos and sophomore Julen Recalde each scored their second goals of the season for WVU (2-1-1), both of which came with less than 15 minutes remaining in the contest. Sophomore Sammie Walker and junior Isaac Scheer both collected assists.
West Virginia outshot George Mason 20-5, including a 10-2 advantage in shots on goal, while taking eight corner kicks compared to just three for the Patriots (1-2-1). George Mason also committed 28 fouls, the most fouls drawn by WVU since at least 2013.
In the first half, the Mountaineers managed just two shots on goal, but could not find the back of the net. Meanwhile, the Patriots had just one shot on goal in the 36th minute that got past WVU goalkeeper Toby Mawer to give GMU the halftime lead.
West Virginia came out on the attack in the second half and came close to equalizing in the 51st minute, as junior Kanta Ishii had a free header off a corner, but the Patriot defender kept it from fully crossing over the goal line.
The Mountaineers finally broke through in the 77th minute, when Ishii was fouled in the box. Pozos stepped up to the spot and converted as the ball just glanced off the inside of the right post.
Not satisfied with a tie, WVU kept attacking and in the 81st minute. Scheer sent a ball up ahead to Walker who got past the back line and had Recalde running with him. Walker laid the ball off for the Spaniard, who after being denied the first time, buried the rebound. In the second half, WVU outshot George Mason, 16-2.
West Virginia will be back on the pitch, at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 11, when the Mountaineers host Denver inside Dick Dlesk Stadium.
