WVU defensive lineman Darius Wiley ruled out for season

MORGANTOWN -- West Virginia football announced what most feared after Saturday’s game against Coastal Carolina. Rich Rodriguez announced on his radio show that redshirt sophomore defensive lineman Darius Wiley is out for the season with a severe ligament injury and could be out for more than a year based on the type of injury. Wiley went down in the second half of the season-opener and was carted off. He’s expected to undergo surgery sometime this week.
Wiley had a productive JUCO career, and the coaching staff talked highly of him this offseason. Wiley had a tackle for loss and three tackles in limited time this season.
At 6-foot-6, Wiley played at Hutchinson Community College, which is one of the top JUCO schools in the country. He helped his team to an 11-1 record in 2025 and led the nation with 20 tackles for loss and was third in quarterback hurries.
Without Wiley, Rodriguez said JUCO transfer Jeremiah Johnson will step up in his spot. He had 34 tackles with 23 solo stops last year. Johnson played during the Coastal Carolina game. He also mentioned Oregon transfer Tobi Haastrup is another name to watch, having a bigger role. Haastrup was a big-time recruit and had 20 tackles for loss in his senior year of high school. He played in just three games for the Ducks and moved on to look for more of an opportunity. He’ll get one now that Wiley is done for the year.
