Morgantown Public Library jam-packs September with events

MORGANTOWN - The Morgantown Public Library System announced their list of September activities Tuesday.
Starting Sept. 9 and every second Wednesday, teenagers aged 13-18 are invited to participate in "Crafting for a Cause," where they will create handmade items for local organizations and community members in need. This month's projects include dog toys for Animal Friends, homemade cards for Sending Sunshine and Meals on Wheels and sensory ocean bottles for the library.
Laura Fletcher, library marketing and communications manager, said that this is the first time the library is hosting the event, but they hope to make it a monthly occurrence.
"One of the ones [events] we're most excited about is called 'Crafting for a Cause,' and it's just for teens," she said. "The idea behind this is it's going to be a once-a-month program, teens ages 13 to 18 can come hang out, do some crafts and activities that benefit the community."
Morgantown High School students can receive up to two hours of community service hours for participating.
Teenagers are also encouraged to come to "Adventure's Guild D&D" Monday, Sept. 14 and 28 from 5-7 p.m. (ages 15-18), "Teen D&D" on Monday, Sept. 14 and 28 from 5:30-7:30 p.m. (ages 13-14), "Teen Anime Club" on Tuesday, Sept. 15 from 5-7 p.m. and "Teen Hangout" on Thursday, Sept. 17 from 5:30-7:30 p.m.
In partnership with Mountaineers for Mutts, the library will host "Caturday" on Saturday, Sept. 19 from 1-3 p.m.
The event includes a "Snuggling Story Time" from 1-2 p.m., where kids are invited to read with foster cats. Following the live reading, all ages are invited to visit the animals or adopt a new pet.
Fletcher said the library has done several reading to trained dogs events, "Reading for Rover," before, but this feline occasion is the first of its kind.
"Librarians and cats go together like peanut butter and jelly, and we love that we have a chance to help out a local shelter, Mountaineers for Mutts, and we also get to bring in cats for the first time," she said.
Preschool aged-children and babies are invited for community storytimes and playgroups every Tuesday-Friday. A full schedule is available at https://mympls.org/programs/kids/.
"Live author talks" will be available for streaming all month, including Daniel Kraus on Sept. 8, Priya Parker on Sept. 15 and Lucky Diaz on Sept. 24. These readings are made possible due to the library's subscription to the “Library Speakers Consortium," according to Fletcher.

Fletcher encourages residents to support their local public library through event participation, and that the library has a space for everyone.
"To us, the library is about more than just a place where you can get books and the internet," she said. "It's about making the community better, and we see ourselves as part of the community and trying to strengthen the community. Whether it's people who are brand-new or people who have been here a long time, there's something for everybody at the library, people of all ages and and all backgrounds."
