MORGANTOWN - The WVU men's soccer team will face its toughest test to date, when the Mountaineers host No. 9 Akron at 7 p.m. Thursday, at Dick Dlesk Stadium.
The Mountaineers are coming off a 1-1 draw at No. 21 UNC Greensboro last Friday. Senior Pablo Pozos scored for WVU (1-1-1), while sophomore Julen Recalde and junior Jacob Redenfors each collected assists. The Mountaineers are coming off a 13-5-3 season and their third straight NCAA tournament appearance.
Pozos was named the 2026 Sun Belt Preseason Offensive Player of the Year after tallying 11 goals and three assists in his first season with the Mountaineers. Junior midfielders Isaac Scheer and Nacho Martinez joined Pozos on the preseason all-Conference team.
Akron is 2-0-1 this season with wins over Dayton and Wake Forest. In the Big East preseason coaches poll, Akron was selected unanimously to finish atop the Midwest Division.
Remi Agunbiade and Matt Dreas were both selected to the preseason all-Big East team. Brett Kaminski has yet to allow a goal this season while making three saves.
WVU is 4-18-3 all-time against the Zips, but the two schools battled to draws in their last two meetings. The Mountaineers haven't defeated Akron since 2018.
