KINGWOOD – No action was taken on the only bid received by the Preston County Commission for cardiac monitors. According to County Administrator Nathan Raybeck, the $32,436 bid was made by Equipment Express. He said the bid included two packs with multiple batteries.
Following a short discussion, commissioners decided to hold the bid for review until their next meeting.
Commissioners also approved hiring Angela Nestor for a temporary position in the Sheriff’s Tax Office. Her salary will be $20 an hour. Sheriff Scott Spiker said she would be helping the staff catch up on the mail the office receives.
Commissioners discussed ways to address the bricks containing information about individual veterans on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial walkway. In December 2020, VVA Chapter 977 petitioned the Preston County Commission to place the memorial on the courthouse lawn. Chapter members Jim Savage and William Benson told the commissioners that the chapter had worked for more than six years to make the memorial a reality. Funding for the project came from money raised by the chapter and donations from the public. The monument walkway is made up of bricks containing the names of veterans, their rank, the years and where they served.
The 5-foot-by-8-foot, 4,888-pound, three-piece black marble memorial cost $19,700, plus $3,500 for delivery and set up. The concrete base is 40 inches deep, 102 inches long and 14 inches wide.
Commissioner Samantha Stone suggested possibly adding a QR code that would direct the public to a list of names and their location on the walkway.
Commissioner Don Smith agreed. He said new bricks are often added and an online approach would be able to provide timely updates.
No further action was taken.
The next meeting of the Preston County Commission will be at 9:30 a.m. Sept. 8.
