KINGWOOD – There aren't many first-ever achievements left for the Morgantown High cross-country program, as it has been one of the top programs in the state for many years, with a fair share of accomplishments both as a team and by individuals.
But the Mohigans managed another first-time achievement over the weekend at the 20th annual Knight Night Relays hosted by Preston High School.
The Knight Night Relays consist of both boys’ and girls’ competitions, in which teams of four compete in a relay race, with each runner completing a 1.5-mile run, for a total of six miles per team.
Both the MHS boys’ and girls’ top relay teams took home first place (some teams included multiple entries).
The Morgantown quartet of Leyland Philips, Jenna Conaway, and Lauren and Allison Hawkins (MHS Relay A) captured first place overall with a time of 35:35.7 in the girls competition. University's Abby Rogers, Cara Zundell, Rosalia Biundo, and Shae Hopkins (UHS Relay A) took third in 36:54.0 behind Elkins in second place in 36:36.9.
Morgantown Relay B, consisting of Tumaini Yawe, Megyn Amsler, Ryleigh Freshour, and Kylie Cline, finished fourth overall with a time of 37:28.9. Preston's Ava Simmons, Delaney Seese, Taylor Grose, and Zoey Borgman (PHS Relay A) rounded out the top five in 38:06.3.
In the boys standings, Morgantown's A team of Joshua Shrewsberry, Kayden Taylor, Maxwell Abdilso, and Joaquin Summers finished in 29:47.0 to match the finish by the MHS girls in first place.
University Relay A, made up of Logan Conroy, James Gipple, Matthew Grant, and Micah Gainer, was close behind in second in 29:54.3.
Morgantown's Andrew Richman, Cole Boggs, Philip Whoolery, and Timothy Samuel Jr. (MHS Relay B) finished fifth in 31:24.3. Preston Relay A was seventh in 32:20.1 (Huxley Rumer, Tyler Parks, Wyatt Foley, and Isaac Copen).
The 20th annual Knight Night relays included over 500 runners and 100 relay teams from 60 schools, the largest one of its kind so far.
In total, there were 52 middle school girls' relay teams, 59 middle school boys' relay teams, 44 high school girls' relay teams, and 60 high school boys' relay teams, featuring athletes from many of the state’s best cross-country programs.
And in good fun, rather than medals or trophies to the winning teams, Preston High coach Paul Martin gives each runner on a winning team a pair of Goodr sunglasses.
