Billy Lee Poffenberger, 85, of Morgantown, passed away peacefully Sunday, August 30, 2026, with his son and daughter by his side.
He was born September 22, 1940, in Delbarton, West Virginia, a son of the late Nunley and Jessie Varney Poffenberger.
Billy was a 1958 graduate of Burch High School in Mingo County, West Virginia, and went on to earn a Bachelor of Science degree from the West Virginia University School of Engineering. He spent much of his career as an engineer with CONSOL before later working for EG&G, a Department of Energy contractor, from which he retired.
While Billy took pride in his career, the things that meant the most to him were his family, his farm, and the simple pleasures of everyday life. He especially loved spending time at his farm in Core, where he gardened and enjoyed being outdoors. His garden often produced far more than he and Pat could use, and he was always happy to share the harvest with family, friends, and neighbors.
Billy had a special place in his heart for animals. He and his wife, Pat, were active supporters and volunteers of the Monongalia County Humane Society for over 40 years. He took great joy in feeding and watching the animals that visited the farm. Whether feeding wildlife or simply napping in his hammock, the farm was his special place.
Billy was also a talented woodworker and mechanic who could fix, build, or repair just about anything. He enjoyed having a project to work on and took pride in a job well done.
Above all, Billy was proud of his family, especially his children and grandchildren. He loved watching them grow and took great pride in their accomplishments. He was always happy to talk about them, and being a father and grandfather was one of the great joys of his life.
Billy shared 63 years of marriage with his beloved wife, Pat. Together they built a life filled with family, hard work, and many cherished memories. Her passing left a space in his life that could never truly be filled, and his family finds comfort in believing that after a lifetime together, Billy and Pat are reunited once again.
He is survived by his son, Alan Poffenberger, and wife Traci; his daughter, Lisa Poffenberger; two grandchildren, Paige Cook and her husband, Brandon, and Carson Poffenberger; and his brother-in-law, Harvey Stacy.
In addition to his parents, Billy was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Patricia "Pat" Poffenberger, and his sister, Betty Lou Stacy.
Family and friends will gather at Fred L. Jenkins Funeral Home on Wednesday, September 2, 2026, from 11:00 a.m. until the time of the funeral service at 1:00 p.m., with Pastor Justin Myers officiating.
