As Monongalia County students head back to class this week, the officers charged with keeping them safe have spent the week sharpening their skills.

Led by veteran sheriff's deputies from August 10-14, the annual training program equipped officers with critical skills, including active shooter response, de-escalation techniques, use-of-force protocols, firearms proficiency and First Aid/CPR.

“We hope that this training will never be used, but we train to prepare for when it is,” said Sheriff Todd Forbes. “Our primary goal every single day is to build positive relationships with students and keep our schools a safe, welcoming space. But when crisis strikes, seconds count. This academy ensures our officers have the sharpest skills and readiness to protect our kids.”

The 14 officers will be stationed across 14 county schools, with remaining campuses covered by partner law enforcement agencies. The School Safety Officers program is funded through the school bond levy passed by voters in May, making Monongalia County one of the few counties in the state to provide this comprehensive blanket of safety for its students.

“Having dedicated School Safety Officers in our halls gives parents peace of mind and ensures help is already on-site if an emergency occurs,” Forbes said. “We owe a huge debt of gratitude to the voters of Monongalia County. Passing the levy in May made this safety network possible, and we are honored by the trust our community has placed in us to protect our students.”
