Former WVU WR Cam Vaughn dismissed from Miami

West Virginia's Cam Vaughn (4) rushes down the field with the ball against Utah on Saturday afternoon.

Former West Virginia wide receiver Cam Vaughn has been dismissed from Miami, according to head coach Mario Cristobal on Monday morning on WQAM's The Joe Rose Show. Cristobal didn’t give a reason for his dismissal.

“Wish him the best,” Cristobal said.

Vaughn transferred to the Hurricanes in the offseason from the Mountaineers. He originally said he’d be staying with WVU, but ultimately chose to head south, joining the National Championship runners-up last season. Vaughn was one of the biggest losses for the Mountaineers this offseason on paper.

Vaughn was WVU’s WR1 last season and led the team with 35 catches for 541 yards and four touchdowns. At 6-foot-2, Vaughn was a safety net for whoever was at quarterback and either drew pass interference penalties or came down with a deep ball.

He came over with Rich Rodriguez from Jacksonville State. Vaughn was originally a quarterback, and Rodriguez made him switch to receiver, where he immediately excelled. Vaughn had 48 catches for 803 yards and five touchdowns at receiver for the Gamecocks.

But Vaughn had his issues. During the last game of the season, against Texas Tech, quarterback Max Brown underthrew Vaughn on a deep pass, which was intercepted, and Vaughn didn’t make any effort to track down the defender. Cristobal didn’t give any intel on why he was dismissed. This is the third player to leave Miami before the season starts.

Starting at /week.
