Jeneane B. "Bonnie" Mattingly died Friday, August 7, 2026, in her residence at Harmony at Southridge, after a long illness. She was born January 13, 1932, in Morgantown, to William and Lena Vorbach, the fifth of nine children born to that union.
On June 22, 1952, she married Jim Mattingly, when they were each 20 years old. Jim was in the Army, stationed in Alaska, and Bonnie joined him there. They had many adventures in Alaska, notably surviving a volcanic eruption that left large amounts of ash on their residence.
Upon returning to Morgantown, Bonnie worked as a secretary and bookkeeper and earned her Ph.T (Putting Hubby Through) while Jim attained his degree at West Virginia University.
Their first daughter, Dina, was born in Morgantown. Jim's work took them to Charleston, where they lived for several years, and where twin daughters, Debora and Danita, were born.
Jim was a construction engineer and the family moved to where roads were being built. The next move was back to Morgantown, where son David was born. They moved to Falling Waters and then, finally, to Bridgeport, where they remained until 2022 when they moved to Charleston.
For many years, Bonnie worked as a bookkeeper for Jim's construction companies.
She was a loyal fan of the Bridgeport Indians long after her kids had graduated high school, and supported the Mountaineers, although after losses she sometimes observed that "those boys must have been partying too much."
Bonnie was a devoted wife, mother, daughter, sister, grandmother, great-grandmother and aunt, and had a sly sense of humor. She enjoyed bowling, time on Tygart Lake, large family gatherings, traveling to visit relatives in Florida, and Contractor Association meetings and trips. She always dressed with impeccable taste.
For many years, she and Jim were members of the Benedum United Methodist Church in Bridgeport, where she thoroughly enjoyed working for its annual Bazaar.
In addition to her parents, Bonnie was predeceased by her son, David; her brothers, Jack, Bob, Bill, Joe and David Vorbach; her sister, Twila Carra; her sisters-in-law, Julia, Kay and Irene Vorbach; and brothers-in-law, Joe Carra and George Sutton.
Bonnie is survived by her husband of 74 years, Jim Mattingly; her daughters, Dina Mohler, Debora Mattingly and Danita Nellhaus; sons-in- law, Bill Mohler and Kurt Nellhaus; daughter- in-law, Denise Mattingly; sisters, Shonet McClung and Sharon Sutton; brother-in-law, James McClung; sisters-in-law, Betty and Beverly Vorbach; her grandchildren, Amanda Mohler, Sally LaPoe (Aaron), Nathan Parsons, Emma Nellhaus (Paul Blankenship), Sophie Nellhaus, Dustin Mattingly and Deidre Mattingly; her great- grandchildren, Charley, Austin and A.J. LaPoe; and a host of nieces and nephews.
The family extends sincere appreciation for the loving and tender care given to Bonnie in her last days by the staff at Harmony, including the aides, nursing assistants and nurses. Likewise, the family is grateful for the care, guidance and support received from Kanawha Valley Hospice in the last six months both for Bonnie and for her family.
A celebration of life will be held at 11 a.m. November 28, in First Presbyterian Church, 16 Leon Sullivan Way, Charleston.
Visitation will begin one hour prior at the church.
