KINGWOOD - A small delegation arrived at this week’s Kingwood City Council meeting with questions about Von Street.
Diana Clark said she purchased a home on the street where her daughter currently lives. Clark said the graveled road was not maintained and cars with low clearance had trouble navigating the street due to water runoff from Maplewood Cemetery.
Von Street is an undedicated street that city officials said has to be brought up to a certain standard before it can be "taken in by the city." Von Street sits directly adjacent to the cemetery. To reach Von Street from the cemetery area, turn onto Maplewood Avenue, turn onto Joy Street and make a quick right onto Von Street.
Robin Hockenberry said there is a dip in the road. He said crush and run gravel will not fix the problem. Hockenberry said the gravel will be washed away by rain. He said the street needs asphalt to level it out.
"I’m afraid to take my camper out," Hockenberry said. "If I make a wide turn, it will tip on to Joy Street."
Justin Haymond said the problem on the street is not a new one. He said it has been an ongoing issue since 2013. Haymond said the drainage has to be corrected before the problem can be fixed.
"This is an issue that’s not going away," he said.
"If we take an assessment on the property where the homeowners pay so much a month to have it fixed, would you be willing to pay every month?" Mayor Karen Kurilko asked.
Kurilko asked Councilmen Perry Barlow and Brian Garbart to check out the street.
No further action was taken.
Council also said trash removal on Court Street will begin Monday. Residents have been taking their trash to Joy Street for pick up.
During the public hearing, council voted to adopt the second and final reading on amendment 50.02 Authorization for Recycling, Addition of Recycling Center Designation, and Penalty. More information can be found at: https//codelibrary.amlegal.com/codes/kingwoodwv/latest.kingwood_wv/0-0-0-681
Council also voted to adopt the second and final reading on an Ordinance establishing Procurement Procedures for the City of Kingwood. The ordinance was adopted after Joe Williams said he wasn’t good with the idea of three verbal quotes. He said he would like it changed to three written quotes so there would be a written record. He said, if someone who shows an interest but doesn’t respond, a note should be added for the record.
The next meeting of the Kingwood City Council will be at 6:30 p.m. Aug. 25.
