New clubs, programs, classes on tap at Kingwood Public Library

KINGWOOD – The Kingwood Public Library is making plans for the future once their pump project is completed this month.

The pump project is an attempt to make sure the library does not flood again. A failed sump pump led to the basement flooding in October 2024 leaving about two inches of standing water in the basement. The library was also closed in September due to an electrical outage.

Head librarian Aaron Johnson said he would like to start a family movie night this fall. "We have the licensing and we can show the movies for free," he said.

Johnson said he would also like to bring back sewing classes that were popular in the past. Johnson said they would like to start with a beginners class and when that class completed, have an intermediate class. He said the library currently has five sewing machines that can be used by students who do not have one to bring to class. He said the $25 fee for the classes goes to the instructor.

Johnson said he would also like to see a Lego Club started. He said the library currently has a Lego Robotics Club that is popular.

"I’d like to see all of those programs up and running by fall," he said. "We do have a board gaming group that people can come in and play by either using the board games we have or by bringing their own favorite games."

Johnson said the library also has books and information that can be used by groups who want to play Dungeons and Dragons. He said the library material is for the 5.5 edition of the game, but players are welcome to bring their own books if they want to play an earlier edition.

Along with books, he said the library also has dice holders players can use, and members of the staff will print out character sheets for free. Johnson said the dice holders and books cannot be taken from the library.

"We want to work with the Kingwood Engagement Council to have a Halloween event again," he said. "A lot of people participated in last years event.”

Johnson said the library also has a genealogy section that can be used in the library. He said anyone interested in genealogy can also check out information at the Library of Congress for free. Johnson said the Library of Congress has collections of newspapers from all across the U.S.

He said the first Monday of each month the Book Club meets at the library. He said this is a free event and everyone is welcome.

"We have Paint Night at 6:30 p.m. every second Thursday of the month. That includes watercolor, acrylics and crafting. It’s $20 per person (cash or check) and you can call and reserve a spot," he said.
