Morgantown City Council accepting applicants for 7th Ward opening

MORGANTOWN - Morgantown City Council is initiating steps to appoint a new 7th Ward representative following the recent announcement that Brian Butcher intends to vacate the seat in the coming weeks.
According to a press release issued Tuesday, the body is accepting applications from eligible applicants interested in serving out Butcher's term, which ends June 30, 2027.
To be eligible, an individual must be a qualified voter in West Virginia and a resident of the 7th Ward. A ward boundary map is available at the city's website, morgantownwv.gov.
Qualified residents should send a statement of interest to the city clerk at cityclerk@morgantownwv.gov.
Statements of interest may indicate the applicant's reasons for interest in serving on city council, involvement in the community, work and life experience, and other information that may be helpful. Statements of interest submitted to the city clerk will be public records and may be disclosed to the public.
The city encourages those interested in applying to submit their statement of interest by Aug. 21.
Following its review of submitted statements, city council anticipates conducting interviews with applicants on Sept. 1 or Sept. 15, starting at 5 p.m., or at another date and time deemed convenient.
City council expects to vote on the appointment to fill the vacancy during a public meeting on Sept. 29.
Butcher announced on July 28 that he was resigning from council due to a pending move into another ward.
He has held the 7th Ward seat since July 1, 2021.
