Mannington District Fair marks 94th year

MANNINGTON - The 94th Annual Mannington District Fair kicked off Monday at the Mannington District Fairgrounds at 1 Bob Thorne Drive. The events will last through Saturday.
Eva Yoho, treasurer of the fair, praised the variety of events at the fair every year.
"There are so many things going on at the fairgrounds, from the motorized sports to the Queen competitions to the stage entertainment," she said. "Everybody's got something different they anticipate."
The festivities began with a petting zoo, a Grand Parade and the introduction of this year's pageant candidates for Mannington District Fair Little Miss, Pre-Teen and Tiny Miss.
The Bar C Ranch Petting Zoo lasts every day from 4-10 p.m. at the Upper Barn, and the carnival opens every day starting Tuesday at 6:30 p.m.
Animal shows this year include lamb, beef, horse, goat, poultry, swine and dairy, and riding, beginning at 5 p.m. today, and lasting until Saturday.
The Demolition Derby, one of the most awaited activities, according to Yoho, begins at 4 p.m. today.
There will be more demolition derbies Wednesday night, starting with Power Wheels at 7 p.m. and ending with the Thomas Motorsport, Jack Thorne Ring Stock, Mini Class and Lawn Mowers derbies at 8 p.m.
The Davisson Brothers play on Wednesday at 8 p.m. and Thursday at 7 and 9 p.m. The live entertainment changes every year, Yoho said.
The Real Shoot Wrestling and Appalachian and Appalachian Outlaw Pro Truck and Tractor Pulling Contests start at 7 p.m. Friday. There will be a Tribute to Taylor Swift at 8 p.m. to end the night.
The final day of the fair includes more horse shows and award ceremonies at 5 and 6 p.m., as well as a KOI Drag Race and Lightweight Horse Pulling contest. The Messenger Brothers will perform at 7 and 9 p.m.
The fair closes every night at midnight.
As a contributor to the fair for over 30 years, Yoho said her favorite part is watching the events come together behind the scenes. She praises the fair's dedication to tradition and chance for community members to reconnect.
"It's a family reunion for some people. For people that haven't seen each other since high school. It's a huge reunion to the community," she said.
Advanced tickets can be purchased at Miller's Hardware in Mannington and First Exchange Banks at Hundred, Fairmont and Mannington. Admission at the gate is $7 cash or $7.25 with a card.
The fair is a nonprofit, Yoho said, and all ticket sales go toward upkeep of the fairgrounds.
