Grethe Andrea Myles

Grethe Andrea Myles, 85, passed away Monday, July 20, 2026, surrounded by family in J. W. Ruby Hospital, Morgantown. Grethe was born February 17, 1941 in Ronceverte, the first daughter of the late Tenna Inge Myles and the late Joseph Harlan Myles.
Following graduation from Bridgeport High School, she enrolled at West Virginia University, where she received a BA and MA in Art. She subsequently taught art at Sabraton and South Junior high schools, finishing her career at University High School in Morgantown.
On March 4, 1976, she married Tom Stuart Witt, Ph.D.; they recently celebrated their golden wedding anniversary.
She was active in many arts organizations including the Designers Craft Guild and West Virginia Art Teachers Association.
She was an active member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, where she served on the Church Council and Altar Guild.
Her hobbies included genealogy, calligraphy, design, and book binding.
She traveled extensively with her husband, both within the U.S. as well as internationally. She loved traveling to her mother’s homeland, Denmark, where she has many relatives. Her Danish Scandinavian heritage was celebrated through her cooking, home decor, and hygge. Her favorite words were skål and tak.
Grethe is survived by her sisters, Catherine Cash (Arthur, deceased), Christine Hasbrouck (James), and Lisa Myles; as well as her in-laws, Mary Jane Witt (John, deceased) and David Witt (Susanna). She is also survived by many nieces and nephews, including Amanda Cash, Hannah Cash, Shann White (Amy), Ben White (Danielle), Taylor Witt, Andrea Arman (Paul), Noelle Borkowski, Theodore Hasbrouck, and Sarah Hasbrouck; and many great-nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, Grethe was preceded in death by two brothers-in-law.
Friends and family will be received in Hastings Funeral Home, 153 Spruce Street, Morgantown, Friday, July 24, from 4 to 7 p.m. Visitation will continue Saturday, July 25, in St. Paul Lutheran Church, 309 Baldwin Street, Morgantown, from 10:30 until the time of the memorial service at 11 a.m., with the Revs. Ben and Courtney Erzkus and Rt. Rev. Matthew Riegel officiating.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations, in Grethe’s name, can be sent to St. Paul Lutheran Church, 309 Baldwin Street, Morgantown, WV 26505.
