MORGANTOWN – Over the last handful of years, the Morgantown High School volleyball team has secured its place at the top of the mountain in volleyball in our state.
Appearing in the state championship game each of the last four seasons, MHS took home the program’s first title in 2023 and did so again last season in 2025 after a 37-5-1 record.
This season, the Mohigans bring back a bulk of last year’s production and are poised to once again contend for the Class AAAA state championship.
“Summer is always interesting because it is a lesson in patience,” MHS head coach Abbey Wolfe said. “It is great to see all the kids after their club seasons with the new rising freshman class, and then letting the returners create the expectations for the program. From my perspective, the state championship is so far in the past that it isn’t much of the conversation right now. We are really focused on laying the foundation for what this team can do and how they want to leave their mark.”
Although MHS said goodbye to a talented group of seniors whose impact on the program will be forever felt, WVSWA First-team All-State selection and 2025 State Gatorade Player of the Year Leah Greeny will be back on the court.
The rising junior recently announced her verbal commitment to play Division I volleyball at WVU.
She led the Mohigans in 2025 as an all-around leader. She totaled 357 kills (48.5%), 91 aces, and 494 receptions, leading the team in categories across the court.
She will be joined up front by senior Abby Paulsen, who tallied 159 kills and led MHS with 70 blocks in 2025.
“Leah and Abby can really set the tone for a match,” Wolfe said. “Just from an optics perspective during warmups, it has quite the intimidation factor against some schools. Then during matches, it is so fun to watch them hype one another up after a big block or kill.”
Seniors Izzy Marra, Emma Smith, Derika Nestor, and Audrey Tompkins round out an experienced 2027 class.
Junior Riley Breenan led the way with 619 assists last season and will continue her role.
Tompkins returns as a defensive-minded libero, totaling 326 digs last season.
“Our depth makes us unique,” she said. “The excitement level is definitely high. We know what it takes to win a championship, and we’ve been putting in the work all offseason.”
Coach Wolfe echoed the thoughts of her senior libero.
“The team is once again very adaptable, and we have multiple options for our offense in terms of where individuals can hit from, what offense we can run, and how we can score. It is really fun to watch,” she said. “From a back row perspective, our serve receive should be one of the best in the state again with Leah and Audrey both returning to the back court. Then having a big block with Abby and Derika in the middle doesn’t hurt our defensive play. The mind is everyone’s worst enemy in high school sports. We are a program that likes to chase, not be chased, so learning how to manage that target on our back is important too.”
