Morgantown High rising senior catcher Bryson McNew has earned a Division I opportunity.
McNew has verbally committed to James Madison University, becoming one of the state’s top Class of 2027 recruits after building an impressive resumé over the last two seasons over the last two seasons at Preston High.
McNew, who is transferring to MHS for next season, said the Dukes made their intentions clear throughout the recruiting process.
The recruiting process has become more difficult as Division I programs continue to fill roster spots through the transfer portal and junior college ranks.
McNew has given college coaches plenty to find.
After earning the Johnny Bench Award as West Virginia’s top catcher as a sophomore, he collected first-team Class AAAA All-State honors as a junior in 2026. He led Preston with a .537 batting average, adding 8 home runs and 27 RBIs.
Now playing summer ball for Hit Dogs Ohio, McNew’s focus is on preparing for his senior season. He realized around the age of 14 that Division I baseball was within reach, but it wasn’t until after his freshman season that his work habits changed.
JMU competes in the Sun Belt Conference and won 36 games in 2024, advancing to the NCAA Tournament.
“I am honored to announce that I will be continuing my athletic and academic career at James Madison University,” McNew said in a social media post announcing his commitment. “I thank my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ for this amazing opportunity. I thank my parents and family for their unwavering support. Special thanks go to Coach Ike, Coach Biagini, and the rest of the staff at JMU for making this happen.”
