MORGANTOWN — Ross Hodge will get a double dosing of WVU rivalry games this season.
The athletic departments at WVU and Virginia Tech announced on Thursday an agreement for a three-game series between the two schools’ men’s basketball teams that will run through the 2028-29 season.
The first game is set for Dec. 5, at Hope Coliseum, which will come just four days before the Mountaineers will travel to PPG Paints Arena to face rival Pitt.
In 2027-28, the two teams will meet at Cassell Coliseum in Blacksburg, Va., and the third game of the series will be played during the 2028-29 season inside the Charleston Coliseum in Charleston. A date for the game at Virginia Tech and in Charleston will be mutually agreed upon prior to each season.
WVU and Virginia Tech last met on Dec. 30, 2015, in Blacksburg with WVU coming away with an 88-63 victory. The two schools last met in Morgantown on Dec. 30, 2014, with WVU winning, 82-51.
The game in December will be the 80th meeting between the two schools. WVU leads the all-time series, 49-30, that began in 1921. The Mountaineers have won nine of the last 13 meetings in the series.
West Virginia has also finalized games against Mercyhurst on Tuesday, Dec. 1, and against Coppin State on Sunday, Dec. 13. Both of those games will be played at Hope Coliseum.
Hodge led WVU to a 21-14 record in his first season as head coach, with the Mountaineers winning three games in Las Vegas to capture the College Basketball Crown tournament.
Virginia Tech finished 19-13 last season under head coach Mike Young. The Hokies are 124-98 through Young’s first seven seasons and played in the NCAA tournament in 2021 and 2022.
