No. 2 University falls to No. 3 George Washington 1-0, bounces back in elimination game over Hurricane to advance at state softball tournament

SOUTH CHARLESTON – The upset trend continued on Wednesday at the 2026 WVSSAC Class AAAA state softball tournament at Little Creek Park in South Charleston, as the No. 2 University High School softball team fell to third-seeded George Washington, 1-0.

The Hawks then rallied 30 minutes later and ground out a 1-0 victory over Hurricane to avoid elimination and advance to play in the nightcap on Wednesday.

A pitcher’s duel between UHS starter Sophia Lehosit and George Washington starter Kynzi Bellamy was broken in the top of the seventh inning by the Patriots, who closed the game out with three outs in the final half, despite a threat from the Hawks.

Both Lehosit and Bellamy threw a complete game. Lehosit allowed five hits and the lone run, without a walk. She also earned six strikeouts.

Bellamy allowed seven hits and allowed three walks, with only one strikeout. But the Patriots’ defense kept the UHS offense in check and secured the victory late.

George Washington opened the top of the seventh with a single, but UHS earned two quick outs.

With a runner on second, GW’s Kacie Long sent a line drive into center field that brought home Ava Armstrong for the go-ahead run (the only run of the game).

UHS then immediately turned around and played another game against No. 5 Hurricane with the loser exiting the tournament.

Campbell entered the circle again for the Hawks following her perfect game on Tuesday against No. 7 Washington, where she earned 17 strikeouts.

She eventually surrendered her first baserunner of the tournament, but was solid once again for UHS, throwing a complete game with eight strikeouts and only three hits allowed.

She also provided two of her team’s five hits, scoring the only run of the elimination contest. Campbell doubled to lead the game off for UHS and eventually came around to score on a fielder’s choice by Madison Shaver.

“If we stay confident, play together, and focus on one pitch at a time, we still have a great opportunity,” UHS head coach Mindy Parks said. “We just have to stay patient, make quality decisions, and put some more pressure on our opponents.”
