MORGANTOWN – Senior Maddie Wisman and the Morgantown High softball defense earned a 7-0 shutout victory over Wheeling Park on Tuesday night in the opening contest of the Class AAAA North Region Tournament.
Wisman went the distance for MHS (20-10) in the win, allowing only five hits and one walk, while earning 11 strikeouts.
MHS will host Jefferson on Thursday with the hopes of punching a ticket to the 2026 WVSSAC state tournament at Little Creek Park in South Charleston, June 4-7.
The Mohigans earned nine hits as a team. Sophomore Hayley Street led the way with a pair of hits and a pair of RBI, to go along with a run scored. Her triple in the bottom of the sixth stretched a three-run lead for MHS to 5-0, and Wisman closed the game out strong in the circle.
“Early in the game, when it was scoreless for a while, I felt like we were putting all the pressure on ourselves,” MHS head coach Lorri Lipscomb said. “That’s when I told them they had to turn around and put that pressure on the other team. That’s when the switch seemed to flip for us.”
The game remained scoreless for the first three innings until the bottom half of the fourth, when senior Grace Robinson singled to left field, bringing in freshman Caroline Mallow for the opening run of the game.
Senior Madi Stone reached on a bunt as Robinson advanced to third before scoring the second run for MHS. Her sister, Beth, then brought Stone home with a base hit of her own as the Mohigans went ahead 3-0.
Wisman retired the side in eight pitches in the fifth and continued to command the zone into the sixth inning, where her offense would add some insurance.
Sophomore Kayleigh White singled before Wisman drew her fourth walk of the evening. That allowed Street to step up and smack a pitch to left field for a triple that brought home two more runs, extending the lead to 5-0. MHS added two extra runs in the inning to lead by seven entering the final frame, where Wisman slammed the door.
