Campbell’s arm, Brown’s bat lift University over Musselman 9-1 in North Region Tournament

MORGANTOWN – Seniors Maddie Campbell and Adalyn Brown had strong nights for University High softball as the Hawks defeated Musselman, 9-1, in the Class AAAA North Region Softball Tournament.

Campbell dominated in the circle, throwing six innings with only two hits allowed and 12 strikeouts. She only walked one batter, and the lone run from Musselman was unearned.

Brown went 4 for 4 at the plate for UHS with a triple, two RBI, and two runs.

With the win, the Hawks advanced to battle Washington on Thursday evening on Lynch Field at Mylan Park for the right to travel to Little Creek Park in South Charleston for the 2026 WVSSAC state softball tournament, June 2-4.

“We tried to come out and treat this like a regular game,” Campbell said. “Business as usual. But also knowing that every game we play from now on could be our last.”

UHS (21-5) broke the ice in the bottom of the third inning when Brown singled home a pair of runs to open the scoring and give her team a 2-0 lead.

The lead doubled in the next inning as Carley Voithofer and Taylor Casino both crossed the plate.

Three more runs came in the bottom of the fifth as junior Whitney Cox tripled home the fifth run before Campbell smacked a line drive that scored two more.

Musselman (12-19) scored its lone run of the evening on a shallow fly ball to short right field that froze both UHS fielders as it fell between the gap. But the Hawks added another pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth to close the contest out. The final run came as junior Maddie Walls hit a fly ball to center field, allowing sophomore Olivia Stickel to score the game-winning run.

“Olivia (Masoner) does a great job of reminding everyone to go out and have fun,” Campbell said. “When we keep it simple and take the game one pitch at a time and don’t get down on ourselves or each other, we like our chances. We want to continue playing and winning as many games as we possibly can.”
