Doris Evajean Schnopp, also known as “Tootie” or “Granny,” 98, of Terra Alta, passed away Wednesday, April 29, 2026, in Dennett Road Rehab Center in Oakland, Md.
She was born April 16, 1928, in Corinth, a daughter of the late Earl Lewis and Virginia Agnes Wright Lewis. Tootie was the last surviving sibling of her immediate family and the oldest person in her town.
Tootie held the most important job as a homemaker, but would also clean and wallpaper homes for friends and family. Tootie is believed to be cleaning the street of gold! She faithfully attended Corinth Church all her life. She was truly one of a kind—strong-willed, a hard-headed woman who fought till the very end, never shying away from being the center of atten-tion, and earning every bit of it. When Tootie walked into a room, you knew she was there.
She loved to cook and bake, eat out at restaurants, and go to thrift stores. She made the best gravy and homemade bread. You could never leave her house without eating something. Later in life, Tootie went to earn her GED, proving that determination doesn’t have an expiration date. She loved to sing and play guitar with her late hus-band, filling any room with beautiful music and per-sonality.
Tootie leaves behind her caregiver and daughter, Penny DeWitt and husband Virgil of Terra Alta; son, Randy Wotring and wife Loretta of Fairmont; son-in-law, Larry Adkins of Charleston; eight grandchildren; 13 great-grand-children; three great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, friends, and family; and her favorite baby doll, Susie.
In addition to her par-ents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Hubert Schnopp; daughter, Mary Adkins; sisters, Joyce Thomas, Glendine Ringer, Evelyn Syruws, Merle Upole; brother, Harold Lewis; and two grand-children, Stephanie and Matthew Adkins.
Friends may call at the Arthur H. Wright Funeral Home in Terra Alta Sat-urday, May 2, from 11 a.m.
until the 1 p.m. time of service, with Pastor Larry Adkins and Pastor Tom Strahin officiating.
Inter-ment will be held in the Terra Alta Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made, in Tootie’s memory, to the Corinth Church, 34319 Veterans Memorial Highway, Terra Alta, WV 26764.
