The West Virginia basketball program has added another experienced piece to the ongoing roster build with a commitment from Florida State transfer guard Martin Somerville.
Somerville, 6-foot-3, 185-pounds, spent last season with the Seminoles, where he appeared in 33 games and started 10. During the year, Somerville averaged 8.0 points, 3.0 rebounds and 2.4 assists while shooting 33.6-percent from the field and 33.7-percent from three.
He scored a season-high 23 points on the road against Virginia Tech in February.
Somerville spent his true freshman season at UMass Lowell, where he was named the 2025 American East Rookie of the Year after a very productive campaign. He averaged 13.6 points, 3.6 assists, 2.9 rebounds and 1.5 steals while shooting 40.5-percent from three.
Somerville becomes the fourth commitment for West Virginia out of the transfer portal since the database opened. He joins Boise State forward Javan Buchanan, Butler guard Finley Bizjack and Georgia Tech center Mouhamed Sylla.
The Maryland native is a versatile guard who has the ability to play on or off the ball, while scoring the basketball off the bounce as well as in catch-and-shoot or step back situations.
The Mountaineers are now up to 10 players on the 2026-27 roster with the coaching staff now focused on filling the remaining slots at wing, in the front court, at forward and perhaps even another guard to round out what head coach Ross Hodge will have in his second year.
Somerville has two seasons of eligibility remaining in his career.
