Former West Virginia football quarterback Will Grier signed with another NFL roster on Tuesday. The Carolina Panthers announced they have agreed to terms with Grier to a contract, reuniting with the team that drafted him in 2019. The Panthers used the 100th overall pick in the third round on Grier.
Grier played two seasons for the Mountaineers after transferring over from Florida. In two seasons, Grier threw for over 7,000 yards and 71 touchdowns. The Mountaineers were ranked a couple of times in 2017 and 2018, and Grier led them to two bowl games.
Grier was a third-string quarterback after being drafted by the Panthers, sitting behind Cam Newton and Kyle Allen. He made his first start in Week 16, and then he played again in Week 17. Both games, North Carolina lost, and he threw for 228 yards with no touchdowns and four interceptions. In 2021, Grier was released by the Panthers.
Since being released by the Panthers, Grier was picked up by the Dallas Cowboys, the Cincinnati Bengals, the New England Patriots, the Los Angeles Chargers, the Philadelphia Eagles and most recently, he was on the Cowboys, backing up Dak Prescott.
Back on the Panthers, Grier, who is 31 and from Charlotte, has a chance to back up young quarterback Bryce Young, who led them to the playoffs last season. Pitt quarterback Kenny Pickett is also in the quarterback room.
