MORGANTOWN – Spring is finally here to stay as the spring sports season rolls into the heart of April, a crucial time of the year for all teams.
With a month gone in the 2026 campaign, multiple local school teams have separated themselves at the top of the rankings across multiple sports in the area.
The Morgantown High baseball team has emerged as one of the top teams in Class AAAA with a 9–0 record to begin the 2026 season.
The Mohigans defeated Wheeling Park 5-4 on Tuesday after falling behind by three runs in the first inning. The bottom third of the MHS lineup all earned multiple hits, and senior Koa Silvers returned from injury with a pair of hits and a run scored.
Senior Lucas Shinn threw six scoreless innings after allowing all four of his earned runs in the top of the first.
MHS will host the annual Mon County Classic this weekend with a contest against No. 3 George Washington on Friday, and a pair of games against Ripley and Urbana (Md.) on Saturday.
(This does not include the result of the game MHS played at Linsly on Wednesday night)
Trinity Christian is off to a strong start in Class A at 4-1, picking up its third straight win on Tuesday over Greenbrier West 18-8.
Senior Parker Hopkins is batting .692 through the opening five games with nine hits and seven RBI. TCS will meet Clay-Battelle on Friday at 4:30 p.m. at Dale Miller Field at Mylan Park in the Mon County Classic.

Both the Morgantown and University softball teams are near the top of the Week 1 Softball Coaches Poll.
The 2nd-ranked Hawks are 9-2 after splitting a pair of games to open the week against Steubenville (5-4 loss) and Spring Mills (4-0 win).
Senior Maddie Campbell tossed a two-hit complete game with 10 Ks against the Cardinals on Tuesday.
MHS earned three wins in five games after a trip to Kissimmee, FL., over Spring Break to improve to 8-3 on the year.
Senior Maddie Wisman earned 32 Ks across three starts (all MHS victories) during the week. The Mohigans will play four games in two days this weekend, splitting the contests between Friday and Saturday.

Track and field season is off to a blazing start as well.
Both the boys’ and girls’ teams for MHS and UHS competed at John Marshall over the weekend and finished within 2 points of each other in the standings.
The UHS girls edged the Mohigans by 1.5 points (132.5-131.0) to capture the title, while MHS overcame the Hawks in the boys competition by 2 points (156.0-154.0).
In the boys’ competition, the meet was tied heading into the final event of the night, the 4×400-meter relay, where the Mohigans came out on top to win the overall title. MHS had 32 personal bests set by both the boys’ and girls’ teams.
The MHS boys lacrosse team remained unbeaten, improving to 6-0 with a 20-6 victory over Buckhannon-Upshur on Tuesday night. Junior Anthony Vessecchia scored seven goals and provided five assists for MHS as one of seven different scorers. The Mohigans will visit Wheeling Park on Thursday night at 7 p.m.
