Former Morgantown state champ, 2024 Bill Evans Award winner Sharron Young enters NCAA transfer portal

Three-time Morgantown High state champion and 2024 Bill Evans Award winner for WV boys basketball Player of the Year, Sharron Young, announced his entry into the NCAA transfer portal on Friday.

Young spent his first two seasons playing for Akron, where he earned All-MAC freshman team honors and helped the Zips to back-to-back NCAA tournament appearances as conference champions.

His announcement comes shortly after former Akron head coach John Groce announced his resignation and intention to take the same position at College of Charleston.

“I want to thank my coaches, teammates, fans, the University, and the entire community for an incredible experience over the past two years,” Young said in a statement on his social media. “I’m truly grateful for the relationships, growth, and championships we won together here.”

Young averaged 7.2 points, 2.6 rebounds, 1.6 assists, and 1.1 steals in 19.1 minutes per game this season for Akron.

He scored a career-high of 20 points against Murray State on December 13, 2025.

Young has yet to announce where he intends to commit for next season.
