MORGANTOWN – With the official conclusion of the winter sports season past, it’s full steam ahead for spring sports in 2026.
Baseball, softball, track and field, and lacrosse are all underway, and local teams are off to a solid start.
University and Morgantown have both opened the softball season with a 4-0 record as they head towards the first head-to-head matchup of the season on Wednesday evening.
UHS has outscored its opponents 37-5 to begin the year. Seniors Maddie Campbell and Sophia Lehosit have been lights out in the circle for the Hawks, allowing only 13 hits in four games.
The Mohigans have had similar success, with senior Maddie Wisman off to a strong start in her campaign.
Wisman threw three games for MHS, totaling 41 strikeouts in the victories with only 11 hits allowed to her opponents.
Trinity Christian and Clay-Battelle each earned their first wins on Monday evening, while Preston is still searching for its first notch in the win column.
Lacrosse is also underway, and the MHS boys team is off to a blazing start with a 2-0 record and 46 goals scored in the two contests.
10 players scored at least one goal for MHS against John Marshall in a 22-2 win to open the season, and nine players scored against Martinsburg in a 24-6 win.
The Hawks split their opening pair, defeating Wheeling Central and falling to Norwin (Pa.), and will return home on Wednesday.
Maxwell Walker leads UHS in goals and assists through two games, with six goals and three assists in the season opener, and five more goals and three assists against Norwin.
MHS girls tennis is also unbeaten through two matches, with 7-0 victories over Buckhannon-Upshur and John Marshall.
