MORGANTOWN – A real snoozer of a game broke out at Kendrick Family Ballpark on Friday.
No. 20 West Virginia captured its second straight Big 12 series of the season with a ho-hum 12-10 victory against BYU. The third game against the Cougars is scheduled for 12:30 p.m. Saturday.
The Mountaineers (15-4, 4-1 Big 12) pounded out a season-high 18 hits, as Paul Schoenfeld went a perfect 5 for 5 with two doubles and two RBIs. Gavin Kelly extended his hitting streak to 15 games and was a home run shy of going for the cycle against the Cougars (10-11, 2-3).
In all, WVU had five players collect at least two hits and Ian Korn picked up his first win of the season by going 4 2/3 innings in relief. Freshman David Perez picked up his fourth save.
WVU has now won four consecutive games and sits in second place in the Big 12 standings behind only UCF.
Schoenfeld’s big day raised his batting average up to .417, while Kelly is now hitting .420.
WVU is expected to start Maxx Yehl on the mound Saturday. He is 3-0 on the season with a 0.72 ERA.
