MORGANTOWN – Is your bracket set for the 2026 Academic Showdown?
Academic Showdown is the Quiz Bowl-styled competition where Mountain State students in grades 9-12 do brain-battle under an intellectual spotlight.
The competition is hosted annually by the state Department of Education, West Virginia Public Broadcasting, the state Higher Education Policy Commission and the state Department of Arts, Culture and History.
Teams from Morgantown High and Fairmont Senior have already advanced to this year’s finals, which will be May 1 at the West Virginia Culture Center in Charleston.
Meanwhile, MHS has a showdown-dynasty going, having taken the top trophy in 2023, 2024 and 2025.
Regional competition began two weeks ago at Marshall University, and those qualifying events run through March.
When it’s all done newcomers and returning teams representing 52 schools from 31 counties will have taken part in the competition that goes well beyond Trivia Night, as Michele Blatt, West Virginia’s superintendent of schools, said previously.
“It develops their self-confidence and improves their ability to think critically,” she said.
Students take on history, fine arts, math concepts, pop culture and more in the showdown.
There’s even an aural payoff, as finalists enjoy competing in the capital city with a full audience of whooping spectators – not to mention cheerleaders and a pep band.
Just like, say, the state high school basketball tournaments, for example.
As Sawyer Rudy observed, the above trappings at the Academic Showdown make for a good, shared experience for students who may not be inclined to play sports.
Rudy, an MHS grad who anchored the 2023 championship team and is now a student at the University Chicago, said the Showdown gives permission for everyone in school to shine.
“And it encourages other students to join academic events,” he said.
