MORGANTOWN — West Virginia pass rusher specialist Larry Knight officially joined the team on Jan. 12. 34 days later, Knight could be on the move again.
Georgia is reportedly working to hire Knight to be its next outside linebacker coach, according to On3’s Pete Nakos. Knight would fill Chidera Uzo-Diribe’s role, which he left behind after he joined the Dallas Cowboys’ defensive staff.
Knight didn’t do much for the Mountaineers, only being with the team for over a month, but he was definitely a strong hire if the Bulldogs thought he could make an impact on their staff. Georgia won the SEC Championship and was knocked out by Ole Miss in the College Football Playoff quarterfinals.
Knight was hired to fill the long-time WVU coach and bandits coach, Jeff Casteel, who retired this offseason. Knight came to Morgantown after having success as a defensive ends coach and run game coordinator for Arkansas State last season. The Red Wolves had 39 sacks on the year, tying for No. 1 in the Sun Belt Conference in total sacks and tying for No. 6 nationally for average sacks per game with three.
Knight also spent time with the Green Bay Packers, the Temple defensive line coach, Georgia Tech D-line coach and on Georgia State’s defensive staff. He was also a defensive intern with the Atlanta Falcons in 2015.
Rodriguez spoke highly of him in his press release, but it seems like he’ll never see Knight in action.
“Larry has done an outstanding job of building defensive lines and developing pass rushers who can bring pressure off the edge,” Rodriguez said. “His ability as a lead recruiter at several of his stops brings our program another experienced recruiter.”
