Candidates listed for county, municipal races in May’s primary election

MORGANTOWN — With the Jan. 31 closure of the candidate filing period ahead of the May 12 primary election, the list of candidates is set for municipal and county races. 

With the exception of the Monongalia County Commission race, which is partisan, each of the nonpartisan county and municipal elections listed will conclude with May’s vote.

County Commission

In the race for the Eastern District seat on the Monongalia County Commission to be determined in November, incumbent Jeff Arnett will face a challenge from Julie Knight in the Democratic primary.

Ron Lytle, who previously served more than a decade on the Monongalia County Board of Education, is unopposed for the Republican nomination.

Monongalia County Board of Education

Three seats representing the Central (C) and Western (W) Districts will be determined during the primary. The board can have no more than two representatives from any district.

Incumbents Michael Kelly (W), Daniel Berry (C) and Jennifer Hagerty (C) have filed as candidates, as have Barbara Mittenberger Green (C) and Michelle Marshall (W).

Monongalia County Magistrate

There are three candidates in the non-partisan race to complete an unexpired Division 4 term as magistrate. 

Deanna Lindsay, who was appointed to the position following the 2025 retirement of Sandy Holepit, is looking to hold onto the seat. Lindsay will face challenges on the primary ballot from Arlie “Eddie” Campbell and Nathaniel “Nate” Faust.

Westover

The three ward seats are up on Westover City Council. 

The three councilors currently in those seats are all unopposed on the May ballot. They include Charles “Alli” Jackson (1st Ward), Jeff Friend (2nd Ward), and Shawna Cross (3rd Ward).

Granville

The positions of mayor and recorder, as well as all five council seats, will be before Granville’s voters in May.

Incumbents Patty Lewis (mayor) and Mary Beth Renner (recorder) are unopposed.

Incumbent council members Bobbie Jo Wolfe, David Bean, Nicky Boyers, Ron Clark and Patty Forbes are seeking reelection, but will face challenges from Logan Thornsley, Charlie Cavallier and Matthew Mcie. 

The five council candidates with the highest vote totals will be elected.

Star City

The positions of mayor and recorder, as well as the five council seats, will be determined by the voters in Star City.

Incumbents Sharon Doyle (mayor) and Steve Blinco (recorder) are unopposed.

Council candidates will include incumbents Gregory Epps, Andy Laskody, Jennifer Hunt and Jim Morris, as well as Jeff Quinn and Mateo Martinez.

The five council candidates with the highest vote totals will be elected.
