MORGANTOWN – The weather is cold, but the action continues to heat up for winter sports as we barrel towards February and the postseason.
GIRLS BASKETBALL
Preston High was the only girls’ team to hit the court over the weekend, as many teams across the state had games postponed or canceled due to the winter storm. The Knights traveled to East Hardy and picked up their sixth win of the season, 63-19. PHS made 20 field goals, including ten 3-pointers, and had 12 different scorers in the contest. Bella Miller and Camdyn Metheny led the way with identical stat lines of 10 points, three rebounds, three assists, and a steal in 11 minutes of action. PHS is scheduled to head to North Marion this evening, pending weather.
BOYS BASKETBALL
Morgantown High remains the lone unbeaten team in Class AAAA after an 83-33 victory over John Marshall on Friday night. Max Frey led MHS with 15 points. Marcus Goins and Arlo Colistra added 14 each as the Mohigans earned their 11th victory of the campaign.
Trinity Christian continues to stack wins with a 72-68 victory over Notre Dame on Friday in Sabraton. The Warriors’ Big 3 of Austin Porta, Collin Lemley, and Maddox Mousadis combined for 64 of their team’s 72 points. Porta knocked down six triples for his game-high 25, with Mousadis dishing six assists and grabbing four rebounds.
After winning its first nine games, Clay-Battelle has dropped its last two contests to Toronto (Oh.) (70-54) and Parkersburg Catholic (85-76). The Cee-Bees are still near the top of Class A with a 9-2 record and will have the chance to pick up some quality wins in the final stretch of the season.
Preston continues to search for its first notch in the win column as the Knights have dropped their last two games by a combined score of three points. PHS fell to Grafton 57-56 before dropping a road game to Fairmont Senior, 33-31.
