One dead in I-79 crash

MORGANTOWN — The Monongalia County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a fatal single-vehicle accident that occurred Monday evening on Interstate 79 Northbound.

At about 8:01 p.m., MECCA 911 received an emergency call reporting a collision approximately one-quarter mile south of the Goshen Road exit. Preliminary investigation indicates that a 2015 GMC Terrain was traveling northbound when the driver entered a construction equipment staging area on the right side of the roadway.

The vehicle struck a stationary excavator parked within the staging area just prior to the interstate bridge over Tom’s Run.

The identities of the individuals are being withheld at this time, but one fatality is confirmed.

The Monongalia County Sheriff’s Office was assisted on-site by Monongalia County EMS and Triune-Halleck and Clinton District volunteer fire departments. Waterfront Towing assisted with vehicle removal.

The crash remains under investigation. No further details are available at this time.
