WVU adds another Power Four tight end

MORGANTOWN — West Virginia’s transfer portal streak stayed alive Monday night.

Mississippi State transfer tight end Cam Ball has signed with the Mountaineers, according to ESPN. Ball becomes WVU’s second tight end of the portal. The Mountaineers added Clemson’s Josh Sapp Sunday night.

Ball is another veteran tight end who is on a one-year rental. He’s played 35 games with 10 starts at two schools. Ball started at Buffalo, where he played for two seasons. With the Bulls, Ball appeared in 11 games and had eight catches for 82 yards.

Then, Ball transferred to Mississippi State in 2024 as a redshirt sophomore. He played in 12 games, but didn’t start. Ball didn’t record any stats and played primarily on special teams. He took snaps on offense in three games.

Ball spent more time on offense in 2026. He played in 12 games, sitting out of the bowl game, and started in four of them. Ball didn’t do too much and only had two receptions for 12 yards.

Ball doesn’t have crazy stats coming into Morgantown, but he’s a massive tight end at 6-foot-7, 250 pounds. Rich Rodriguez runs the ball a lot, so tight ends are expected to block a lot. At 6-foot-7, 250 pounds, Ball should be a great blocker in the run game. He doesn’t have too many catches, but he can if he needs to.

The Mountaineers have gained a lot of size in the transfer portal. WVU beefed up the offensive line with mostly 300-pounders and picked up a tall receiver at 6-foot-5. One of the issues last season was that when WVU got to Big 12 play, they were outsized, and Rodriguez has made it a point of emphasis to not be in 2026.

Ball is WVU’s 27th player to transfer in during this cycle. The portal closes on Jan. 16, but WVU can still add past that deadline. Players just can’t jump in after Jan. 16.
