WVU signs second kicker out of transfer portal

MORGANTOWN — West Virginia added its third specialist from the transfer portal, and its second kicker.

Western Kentucky and Northern Ireland kicker Jack Cassidy signed with the Mountaineers Sunday afternoon, according to a post from WVU football. Just a few days before, WVU added Alabama transfer Peter Notaro.

Cassidy hasn’t played in college for long, but in limited time, he had success in 2025 with the Hilltoppers. Cassidy made all three of the field goals he attempted, with two of them being over 50 yards, with a long of 54 yards.

Cassidy was a highly rated kicker before college. He was rated as a 5-star transfer and the No. 13 available kicker post-signing day, according to Kohl’s Kicking Camps. Cassidy has also punted and was rated as a 5-star and the No. 10 available punter, before Western Kentucky.

The Northern Ireland native already has the endorsement of former WVU punter and kicker Pat McAfee.

“6-foot-6 Irish Ball Bombing lad coming to Morgantown,” McAfee said on X. “Let’s GOOO Jack Cassidy. Can’t wait to watch you do your thing. Sláinte.”

WVU now has a kicking competition on its hands. The Mountaineers lost last year’s kicker, Kade Hensley, who ran out of eligibility, so they needed a kicker. Cassidy’s arrival put him in a competition with Notaro, who was also highly rated and didn’t see much action in his first year. Cassidy has the age on Notaro, so maybe he’ll be more of the kicker for now, and Notaro will be for the future.

But, Rodriguez doesn’t play favorites and always said he’ll play whoever WVU can win with.
