MORGANTOWN — West Virginia is shaping up its specialist unit from the transfer portal.
Alabama kicker Peter Notaro announced on social media that he’s transferring to the Mountaineers. Notaro joined Colorado State transfer punter Bryan Hansen as WVU’s two specialist additions this cycle.
Notaro is a young kicker and has only been in college for one year. Notaro served as the backup placekicker and played in just two games. He made all five of his PATs and kicked off five times.
The Wexford, Pennsylvania native, was a 5-star recruit and rated as the No. 4 kicking prospect, according to the well-known Kohl’s Kicking. Notaro made 17 field goals in his last two seasons in high school. He set his school’s record with a 53-yarder.
He was on West Virginia’s radar coming out of high school, but he ultimately chose the Crimson Tide. Penn State, Ohio State and Pitt were also options out of high school.
WVU needed a kicker. Rich Rodriguez brought in Coastal Carolina kicker Kade Hensley on a one-year rental. Hensley made 10 of his 13 field goals and missed one of 32 extra points. With Notaro’s background, he should make a strong case to be WVU’s kicker in 2026 and years to come, since he’s still so young.
The Mountaineers are now up to 22 commitments this cycle, a week removed from the portal opening on Jan. 2.
