Veteran Georgia State corner joins WVU

MORGANTOWN — West Virginia added more secondary help Saturday afternoon.

Georgia State corner Chams Diagne announced on social media that he’s transferring to the Mountaineers, becoming the fifth defensive back to do so.

Diagne is a veteran and started his college career walking on to the Panthers in 2022. He redshirted and then decided to go to Independence (Kan.) Community College. Diagne played eight games and made five tackles. He went back to Georgia State in 2024 and saw action in 11 games. He had six tackles in those 11 appearances.

Last season, Diagne played in 11 more games for the Panthers. He racked up 25 tackles and broke up three passes. Diagne also had an interception against Ole Miss. The Rebels just recently lost in the College Football Playoff semifinals.

Diagne is a big corner who’s played a lot of snaps. He’s 6-foot-4, which is a lot bigger than the average corner. Most corners are around the 6-foot range. His height made him an intriguing prospect in the transfer portal. Diagne was rated a 3-star in the transfer portal, according to 247Sports. He was rated as the 128th corner in the portal.

The Mounainteers needed some help in the secondary. There were a lot of graduations, and at the corner position, WVU could be without the top corner Michael Coats Jr., who ran out of eligibility. Diagne is an experienced corner who should have a strong chance to win a starting role for the Mountaineers in 2026.

Diagne is the fourth corner added in the portal. He’s one of the more experienced corners added, right there with UNLV transfer Andrew Powdrell. These two fit Rich Rodriguez’s most recent additions that are more focused on winning now, compared to how he started off this cycle, adding a lot of inexperienced players, who can help in the future.
