Susie J. Croaston, 96, of the Jere community, passed away early Saturday morning, December 20, 2025, in her residence.
She was born May 12, 1929 in Morgantown, a daughter of the late Ernie and Virginia Riffle.
Survivors include children, Aileen Bohon and husband Melvin of North Carolina, Charlotte Jane Shepherd of Pursglove, Ruth Croaston of Morgantown, Judy Garner of Florida, and Peggy Freeland Strong of Reedsville; more than 50 grandchildren, great- grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren; sons-in-law, Richard Freeland of Morgantown and Ed Garner of Morgantown; and her niece and nephew.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of more than 69 years, James Franklin Croaston June 29, 2018; her children, Shirley Thomas, James “Jimmy” Franklin Croaston, Jr., Debra Freeland, Janet Barnett, and Loran David Croaston; granddaughters, Rebecca Jane McGee and Crystal Bohon; a brother, Bud Riffle; and a sister, Myrtle Riffle; sons-in-law, Cecil H. McGee, II, Bill Strong, Frank Barnett, Fred Costello, and Keith Huffman.
Susie worked for 35 years as a cook for WVU Hospitals, Senior Mons, and Kinder Haus. As the head of her family, her husband always referred to her as the “chief cook and bottle washer.” She always worked hard and did everything in life that she set out to do. She was also proud to be in ministry with her husband for 42 years.
Friends may join the family to honor Susie’s life and legacy at Smith Funeral & Cremation Care, 108 Holland Avenue, Westover, Tuesday, December 23, from 10 a.m. until the time of the funeral service at 12 noon, officiated by Pastor Skylar Linderman. Following the service, Susie will be laid to rest with her husband at Beverly Hills Memorial Gardens in Westover.
