Prep Roundup: Winter sports off to a strong start

Plenty of action went down on the hardwood and the wrestling mat over the weekend as multiple area teams picked up impressive wins.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Morgantown – Morgantown is now 4-1 on the season after handling Wheeling Park 75-26 on Tuesday and then dropping its first contest of the year to Southern Garrett (Md.) 55-48 on Thursday. MHS will enjoy a week off for the holidays before traveling to visit John Marshall on Tuesday, December 30.

University improved to 4-1 over the weekend with a one-possession victory over Wheeling Park on the road, 49-46. That followed another road win over Laurel Highlands (Pa.) last weekend. The Hawks will return after the holiday break with a trip to Greenbrier East for tournament play. UHS opens the weekend against Martinsburg on December 29 and will face an opponent that will be determined on the 30th.

Preston High traveled to Savannah, Ga., over the weekend and returned with a pair of wins over out-of-state competition. The Knights fell to May River (S.C.), 35-21, but returned the next two days for a pair of victories. PHS defeated Savannah Christian (Ga.) 60-29 and Hilton Head Prep (S.C.) 44-10. PHS will host Bridgeport on January 8, 2026.

Clay-Battelle dropped its only game of the week to St. Mary’s 85-13 and will host River View on January 9, 2026.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Morgantown hosted the Hope Gas Holiday Classic over the weekend and picked up two victories in dominating fashion over Shady Spring (75-40) and St. John’s Catholic Prep (Md.) (90-49). MHS is averaging over 87 points per contest through four games and will battle Riverside on December 29.

University also picked up two wins at the Hope Gas Holiday Classic on Friday and Saturday over St John’s and Shady Spring. The Hawks outscored St. John’s 25-8 in the fourth quarter to win the game 59-51, before returning Saturday to defeat Shady Spring 82-57. UHS senior Glenn Brown scored 25 points in game one and 24 in game two. The Hawks will host Bridgeport on Tuesday night before traveling to Hedgesville on December 29.

Preston has yet to pick up a victory in four games, the latest defeat coming at the hands of Lewis County, 58-54. The Knights will host George Washington on December 30 before battling St. Albans on New Year’s Eve.

Clay-Battelle won both of its games at the annual Santa Series in Blacksville over the weekend. The Cee-Bees downed Tygarts Valley 69-51, then battled Notre Dame on Saturday, picking up a 70-37 win to move to 3-0 on the season. The Cee-Bees traveled to East Hardy on Monday in a massive clash of state tournament teams from 2024.

Trinity Christian fell to Jefferson-Morgan (Pa.) 52-39 on Friday in the 2025 Santa Series hosted by Clay-Battelle, but returned on Saturday against Gilmer County, earning a 64-60 victory to improve to 4-1 on the year. The Warriors will host Richwood on December 27.

WRESTLING

University High hosted the annual Nurse Pro Plus Tournament over the weekend and finished in first place. Winning titles for the Hawks were Junior Max Fortier (tournament MVP) and Senior Emerson Murphy. 2nd place finishers were freshmen Jude Benson and Jacob Hensley, seniors Jason Walker, and junior Dylan Apanawicz. 3rd place finishers were sophomore Nico Maisel, juniors Max Vitale, and senior Ethan Koloski. Next up for the Hawks is the Powerade Tournament at Canon-McMillan HS in Pa., known as the 2nd-toughest tournament in the country.
