MORGANTOWN – Delegate John Williams, D-Monongalia, announced on Tuesday morning his candidacy for the state Senate 13th District seat, currently held by Sen. Mike Oliverio, R-Monongalia.

Williams made his announcement from his kitchen table in his Morgantown home, in keeping with the theme of state Democratic legislators’ “Kitchen Table Tour,” visiting communities to discuss what they term kitchen table issues.

Williams said he is centering his Senate campaign on affordability, cost-of-living pressures, healthcare costs, childcare, housing, and the everyday financial decisions families make around their own kitchen tables.

“At the end of the day, most of the decisions people care about don’t happen in the Capitol — they happen at the kitchen table,” Williams said. “Families are trying to figure out how to afford groceries, childcare, housing, healthcare, and utilities. My campaign is about meeting people where they actually live — not just geographically, but economically.”

Williams said his campaign will emphasize “practical, common-sense solutions aimed at easing financial strain and restoring a sense that government is working for everyday people, not just those at the top.”

He wants to focus, he said, on policies to lower household costs, strengthen local economies, protect

public education, expand access to affordable healthcare, and ensure that working families can get ahead rather than fall further behind.

Williams was first elected to his House seat in 2016. He represents the 80th District. Oliverio served first in the House of Delegates and then in the state Senate from 1993-2011. He returned to the Senate in 2022 and is seeking reelection.
