MORGANTOWN – A broken water main impacted school, travel and water service for some Morgantown residents on Thursday.
Just after midnight, the Morgantown Utility Board was alerted to a possible water leak within the system.
A subsequent search uncovered a broken 12-inch water main along Mississippi Street, between East Parkway Drive and M-Tec Drive, a short distance from MUB’s Green Bag Road headquarters.
According to MUB Spokesman Chris Dale, the resulting outage impacted 22 customers along Mississippi Street, East Parkway Drive, Madison Avenue, Elysian Avenue and West Virginia Avenue.
Both MTEC, located a stone’s throw from the site of the break, and nearby South Middle School dismissed students just after 10 a.m. due to the outage.
Mississippi Street was closed between M-Tec Drive and East Parkway Drive during the repairs.
Dale said the fix required MUB crews to excavate to a depth of roughly 12 feet to replace a 10-12 foot section of the pipe.
The repairs were completed and water was restored at around 4 p.m.
“In the later morning hours Friday – after the school buses run – the area will be cold patched. Permanent repairs to the road surface will be made during the week of Thanksgiving, when students are on break,” Dale said.
