MORGANTOWN – The Morgantown High football team pitched its third shutout of 2025 against visiting Musselman in a 45-0 drubbing at a wet and rainy Pony Lewis Field on Friday night.
With the victory, the Mohigans complete their 2025 regular season schedule 9-1 and will hold the top seed in the Class AAAA playoffs, beginning next week with the opening round.
MHS followed up last week’s 21-0 shutout of University in the Mohawk Bowl with another strong performance on the defensive side of the ball against the Applemen (4-6).
MHS sophomore quarterback Maddox Twigg tallied 327 total yards and four touchdowns. He completed 13 of his 17 passing attempts for 257 yards and three scores, and rushed for 70 yards on eight carries with a fourth touchdown.
His favorite wideout on Friday was senior Jayden Smalls, who caught six passes for 141 yards and two touchdowns, his fifth and sixth of the season. Owen Young caught the third receiving touchdown for MHS, who was without senior Carter Cooper for the game.
The Mohigans allowed only 96 total yards to Musselman on Friday night, while also recovering two fumbles. The Applemen were 1-13 on third down and 0-4 on fourth down.
“Our kids and coaches know what they’re doing, and they listen to what we ask from them,” MHS head coach Sean Biser said. “I say it all the time, credit to those guys on defense. I say it all the time because defense wins championships, defense travels, defense does all the things you need to do to win.”
Defense was important early for Biser’s club on Friday night as the offense opened with a punt after an opening drive plagued with penalties.
MHS got the ball back and found its first score of the night as senior Keltin Blunt took a jet sweep 50 yards to the house with 2:34 left in the opening quarter.
Mussleman drove the ball to the Morgantown 35 on its next possession but failed to convert a 4th and 2 to begin the second quarter. Five plays later, Twigg scampered home from 18 yards away to double the lead. The touchdown was set up from a 35-yard run by senior Isaiah Thompson earlier in the drive.
The Mohigans found the endzone twice more before halftime, both on throws from Twigg to Smalls. The first was a 39-yard strike caught in the endzone, the second was a screen pass that Smalls took 63 yards to the house, giving the hosts a 29-0 lead at the break.
Morgantown’s Ze’von Shipman blocked a punt after the opening drive of the second half from Musselman that rolled out of the endzone for a safety. That gave the Mohigans a 31-0 lead and the ball. They capitalized with another huge play as Twigg found Young for 50 yards down the field for another touchdown.
Carson Keeling added the final score of the night for Morgantown, who will hold homefield advantage through the semifinals of the Class AAAA playoffs with the win.
“It’s a one-game season right now, everybody’s 0-0 come next week,” Biser said. “We go into next week’s game like it’s the last game of the season and then see what happens after that. We don’t want to look ahead whatsoever. This time of the year, anybody can truly beat anybody, and anything can happen.”
The 9-1 finish is the first of its kind in the regular season for Morgantown since 2011, and the best finish for Biser in his six seasons at the helm of the program.
In fact, Biser has increased his win total each year since becoming head coach of the Mohigans.
“That’s all credit to our coaches, kids, and community,” he said. “They’re fantastic. Our kids and coaches put the time, effort, and energy into what we do, and we love each other. Don’t get me wrong, we are hard on our kids, but we love them too. We push them in the weight room and on the field, and the results come from that.”
