Morgantown girls’ soccer season ends with 5-0 loss to George Washington in state semis

BECKLEY — The tail-end of the 2025 soccer season took on new meaning for the Morgantown High School girls after they won their final three games and earned a berth in the West Virginia Secondary Schools Activities Commission State Soccer Championships.

On Thursday evening, that season came to an end at the hands of the same team to which they lost the state title last year — George Washington High School, with the Kanawha County Lady Patriots earning a 5-0 victory.

This year’s Mohigans came in at 8-8-2. However, they hit a juggernaut in George Washington. The Patriots dictated the pace of the game throughout, moving the ball with ease and putting pressure on Morgantown’s back line throughout. George Washington scored two quick goals out of the gate and paced the game away from there.

The Mohigans’ front-line scorers of Ella Miller and Gabbie Brown struggled throughout the evening to find space, often having two or three defenders pressuring them for possession.

Morgantown High coach Bri Frontuto commended her girls for their strong finish.

“I’m just so proud of the resiliency that they’ve had this year. Nobody thought we would make it this far,” she said. “They fought hard. GW is a great team, and they executed on the areas that we expected them to. I thought we were prepared, but they were able to make plays and put the ball away. Good job to them.”

She also noted the last time her girls played George Washington in Beckley — last year’s state title contest — it went into penalty kicks, with George Washington prevailing.

“I know the girls wanted some revenge, but you know, it’ll come. Their time will come. And we got a lot of young, brand new players. I mean, half the team hadn’t even played soccer before, so I’m proud of the way that they were able to come together and improve throughout the year.”
