Dominion Post staff wins statewide press awards

The Dominion Post won 15 statewide awards for advertising and editorial content for 2024. The DP competes in Division 1 against the largest newspapers in the state.

Advertising manager Sabrina Ulrich won two first-place awards in this year’s contest: Best Color Ad Quarter Page or Less with graphic artist Paul Baird for West Virginia Black Bears and Best Online Motion Ad with graphic artist Eric Tomlinson for Steak N Shake.
Advertising account executive Jamie Nelson won a first-place award for Best Color Ad Larger than a Quarter Page, for Apex Physical Therapy, and former ad account executive Jesalyn Kamaka won first place for Best Agency Ad for Almost Heaven BBQ.
In addition, Ulrich with graphic designer Darris Pratt won a second-place award for Best Color Ad Larger than a Quarter Page for Weimer Hyundai. Kamaka won second place for Best Agency Ad for Black Water Outdoor Adventures.
Advertising account executive Debbie Harrison won a third-place award for Best Color Ad Larger than a Quarter Page for Greer Industries.


Editorial
Former managing editor Katie McDowell earned first-place recognition as Best Lifestyle Columnist for columns titled “Mothers and daughters are beautiful things,” “Dogs not into new morning routine” and “Everyone needs a rock sometimes.”
Photographer and digital audience developer Benjamin Powell took first place in Feature Photography for a solar eclipse image, captured April 8, 2024, and a third-place nod for News Photography for a photo entitled “Rich Returns to WVU.”
The Dominion Post staff was credited with a first-place award for Best Single Issue from Nov. 28, 2024.
Other editorial awards include:

  • Justin Jackson earned second-place for Best Sports Columnist.
  • Editor Candace Wolf won a second-place award for Best Headline Writing for “Isn’t This Rich?,” “‘Write’ Approach” and “Coming Full Circle,” and third place for Best Front Page for the Dec. 21, 2024, edition.
  • The DP staff won a third-place award for Best Newspaper Design for the Nov. 14, 2024, edition.
    The awards were conveyed to the winners on Saturday, Oct. 11, at the West Virginia Press Association Convention at the University of Charleston.
    The contest occurs annually through the West Virginia Press Association. This year, New York Press Association and The New York News Publishers Foundation acted as judges of the West Virginia newspaper entries.
