Local golfers conclude play at 2025 state tournament, University’s Estel finishes T-8

WHEELING – The 2025 WVSSAC state golf tournament crowned the first state champions of the school year on Wednesday, as Day 2 of the multi-round contest wrapped up competitively.

Hurricane (AAAA), Shady Spring (AAA), Midland Trail (AA), and Charleston Catholic (A) all took home team state titles.

University placed sixth in Class AAAA, with Morgantown taking eighth.

Individually, UHS senior Owen Estel tied for eighth out of 37 golfers, shooting 15-over par through his two rounds. Estel shot 12-over (83) in Round 1 on Tuesday before returning on Wednesday and firing a 3-over (74), which tied for the second-lowest score in Round 2.

UHS sophomore Will Biddington finished in a tie for 16th, and MHS sophomore Angela Yao led her team, finishing in a tie for 19th. Her teammate and fellow sophomore, Brody Williams, shot an 83 in Round 2 to place tied for 23rd with Preston senior Robbie Lowe, who qualified as an individual. MHS freshman Brody Lemon finished tied for 27th in his first season of high school golf.

In Class A, Clay-Battelle senior Ryan Parker, competing in his second consecutive state tournament, improved his second-round score by ten strokes to secure 17th in the state.
