RICHWOOD – Trey Huggins was Mr. Versatility for No. 9 Clay-Battelle on Friday.
“He ran one in, threw one in and caught one,” was the way C-B head coach Aaron LaPoe put it.
All of them went for touchdowns, as the Cee-Bees rolled Richwood, 47-6.
“He’s an electric athlete,” LaPoe continued about Huggins. “He’s been very steady and reliable for us all season. He’s been phenomenal for us.”
C-B (5-1), which has won five in a row since an opening-season loss against Cameron, opened the game with a rushing touchdown from Caleb Snodgrass and then quarterback Corey Coen hit Braden Ponceroff on a 30-yard touchdown pass.
That’s when Huggins got involved. First, he caught a touchdown pass from Coen in the second quarter. In the second half, he took over at quarterback and scored on a 60-yard run. He finished the night off with a 10-yard scoring toss to Ponceroff.
LaPoe said the Cee-Bees’ running game was the difference against the Lumberjacks (0-6) with Coen, Snodgrass and Caleb Hall. Snodgrass finished with two rushing scores and Hall added one before halftime.
“All three of them had big nights running the football,” LaPoe said. “That’s kind of become who we are.”
LaPoe also said the C-B defense stood out with Colt Sandy picking up four quarterback sacks.
“Sandy has been a big unsung hero for us all year,” Lapoe said. “On offense, he’s a blocking tight end for us, but he really made an impact on defense for us. That was great to see.”
The Cee-Bees will now hit the meat of their season. Next week is a home matchup against Class AA River View, which could offer up more playoff points if Clay-Battelle pulls out the win. After that, Sherman, the No. 2-ranked team in Class A visits Blacksville, before another game against Class AA Oak Glen.
“What I’ve told the guys is this is where we could achieve our dreams,” LaPoe said. “As far as playoff points and positioning goes, it’s all right there for the taking. We definitely have to be locked in and focused, and we’ll definitely find out just where we belong in the whole thing.”
