Ira M. “Sonny” Keener Jr., 92, of Taylortown, Dunkard Township, Pa., died Friday, October 3, 2025, following a brief illness. Born in Dunkard October 13, 1932, he was a son of the late Nannie Kiger Keener and Ira M. Keener, Sr.
A graduate of Mapletown High School, Sonny served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict.
He retired from Duquesne Light’s Warwick Mine in Greensboro, and was a member of the U.M.W.A., the American Legion and the V.F.W., and a faithful member for many years of the First Baptist Church of Dunkard. He was a skilled finish carpenter and mason by trade, and was well known in the area for his ability to build or repair just about anything.
On December 15, 1957, he married his wife, Kathryn “Katy” Weaver. After they raised their children, they enjoyed camping and traveling in their camper. She passed away March 12, 2015, after 57 years of marriage.
Also deceased are sisters, Mildred Donley and Melva Wilson; and brothers, Emmett and Roy Keener.
Surviving are two children, Valetta Shuppe of Saltsburg, Pa., and Randy Keener and wife Teresa of Norfolk, Va.; one granddaughter, Yvonne Shuppe of Ruffsdale, Pa; a stepsister, Lois Dieson of Star City; several nieces and nephews and their families; and his in-laws, Joe and Linda Weaver of Mount Morris, Pa., and Dixie Dahmer of Weston.
Honoring his wishes, there will be no public services at this time. A memorial for family and friends is being planned for later date.
