BLACKSVILLE – Clay-Battelle has officially put the rest of Class A on notice.
The Cee-Bees continued their impressive 2025 campaign with a wire-to-wire victory over the fifth-ranked team in Class A, Meadow Bridge, 54-12 on Friday night in Blacksville.
C-B junior quarterback Corey Coen totaled five touchdowns, with three coming through the air and two on the ground. He ran ten times for 87 yards and the pair of scores, while completing eight passes for 169 yards and three touchdowns.
“This week was all about staying focused and present and not worrying about all the extra stuff,” C-B head coach Aaron Lapoe said. “Just stay focused on blocking and tackling and go to work. Lord willing, the win will take care of itself if we do that.”
All three of Coen’s scoring passes went to senior wideout Braden Ponceroff, who caught five passes for 147 yards, finding the endzone thrice. He also added a kickoff return touchdown, an interception on defense, and kicked an onside kick that the Cee-Bees recovered.
Caleb Snodgrass and Caleb Hall combined for 191 yards on 18 carries, while each found the endzone once for a rushing touchdown. The Cee-Bees ran for 277 yards as a team on 29 carries.
Coen began the scoring with a one-yard run into the endzone after the Cee-Bees elected to receive the opening kickoff. Lapoe’s squad wouldn’t look back from there, adding a second score in the first quarter as Snodgrass scored from 17 yards out.
“Getting off to a fast start was very important for us because they have a powerful running offense,” Lapoe said. “We knew if they were able to get into a situation where they were leading with ball control, that could change the nature of the game. So when we won the toss, we took the ball right away and scored quickly.”
It only took eight plays for C-B to score 14 points in the first quarter, and they doubled their total of 14 in the second with four more touchdowns, including all three of the connections between Coen and Ponceroff.
“We have speed out there, and our guys have some good hands,” Lapoe said. “Corey throws a nice ball, and they spend time working together a lot. We thought we were a little bit quicker than they were coming into the game, and it turned out to be an advantage tonight.”
The first two came on back-to-back plays for the offense, with a 44-yard strike on the first play of a drive, and a 41-yard score on the very next possession. The Cee-Bees scored twice without Meadow Bridge running a snap due to a recovered onside kick between the touchdowns. Coen accounted for four of his six total touchdowns in the second frame.
The hosts took a 42-6 lead into halftime and added two more scores from Coen and Ponceroff in the second half, the latter being a 75-yard kickoff return that put the cherry on top of an impressive victory for the Cee-Bees.
Meadow Bridge scored a late touchdown from Trip Roles, who tallied both of his team’s touchdowns to the endzone.
With the win, Clay-Battelle improves to 4-1 on the season and will undoubtedly strengthen its spot in the Class A playoff rankings released on Tuesday. The Cee-Bees will travel to face Richwood next Friday.
“We still have a ton of challenges ahead of us, and what this win says tonight is that we were better than Meadow Bridge on October 3,” Lapoe said. “But we have a resilient squad, and it’s a wonderful thing to see guys stepping up and contributing when we need them to. We’ve got a playoff-ready schedule ahead of us and have to continue to improve every week.”
